What you should know about Saturn's first Trojan asteroid?
Giant Saturn has joined the ranks of Saturn Trojans after the space rock is thought to be floating around thousands of years ago.
The paper further states that with this event, Saturn has now become the parent of trojan asteroids which are trailing behind it in its path around the Sun, along with the other planets in the Solar System.
What has been revealed…”, gas giant rather cheated a little, so as to fit in with its contemporaries, Jupiter, Neptune.
It is observed that Saturn does not appear to be a stable parent for this Saturnian Trojan as this trojan is of an unstable orbit and will completely disappear within one thousand years.
This also tells that researchers will have to do a lot of work looking for more ‘hanging’ asteroids because it seems as if the ringed planet is here to fit in with the other gas and ice giants.
One interesting fact is that even Earth and Mars which are smaller terrestrial planets have trojan orbits.
The composition of this asteroid is unknown” however “We think it is about 9 miles (15 kilometers) across, it probably originated from the Kuiper Belt beyond Neptune,” Paul Wiegert, a member of the discovery team further added.
He stated, The Trojan asteroid was very clearly pushed back and forth between gas giant planets and has been engulfed by Saturn.
Moreover, Wiegert explained, Trojan asteroids are the space rocks which are located at one of the two Lagrangian points formed by the orbiting body.
