Smith regains form, Cummins makes a comeback, and Hazlewood is ill as NSW dominates Victoria.
Victorians thrashed as Smith finds some touch, Cummins returns but in the Same Match Hazlewood did not feature due to illness.
Josh Hazlewood did not feature in the match as he was unwell but Cummins made a successful comeback while Smith scored 56.
New South Wales 336 for 8 Gilkes 74, Maddinson 63, Smith 56, Siddle 5-49 beat Victoria 196 Short 80, Green 3-27, Anderson 3-37 by 140 Runs Meaning.
Both Steve Smith and Pat Cummins were looking for respect after New South Wales smashed Victoria in the One Day Cup clash which was held at the Junction Oval.Moreso after Josh Hazlewood was pulled back from the game as he was ill and showed no sign of recovery in the morning.
Both teams were able to hold their pre- match rituals during an early rain break , in which Shane Warne’s namesake stand was unveiled by the Victoria ground officials center. On the other hand, Hazlewood was not able to participate in that pre- game rituals and had to leave the stadium a few minutes prior to that after complaining of dizziness and nausea.
“He was awful this morning,” said Matthew Gilkes in a post-match interview. “I think he had a headache and he looked like death.”
Now, Under-19 World Cup winner Charlie Anderson replaced him who took 3 wickets on his List A debut. So, Anderson was on this trip for exposure or experience support until Hazlewood was out of action. He was forced to wear Sam Konstas’ shirt since he did not have one on tour with him having his name on it.
While, Smith Nic Maddinson and player of the match Gilkes scored brisk fifties all ended up in double figures helping Blues with 8 wickets for 336 runs in 45 overs. The funny thing however is most of the time Victoria’s bowlers were annihilated on a good wicket but veteran Peter Siddle was the only one doing alright. He turned 40 months prior and was playing his 81st list A match almost after 19 years since he started and he took his first five wicket haul in the match. His 9 over spell included the wickets of Smith Gilkes Cummins Josh Philippe and Moises Henriques as he took 5 for 49.
Victoria never came close, bowled out for 196 in reply at the back of a remarkable 57-ball 80 from Matthew Short who made his return from an adductor injury that kept him out of action during the last ODI of Australia's tour of the United Kingdom. Short looked in great form as he prepared for the ODI series against Pakistan where he is likely to bat at the top of the order as the team is without Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh.
Not much was expected from Glenn Maxwell upon his return to the senior Victoria side which didn't start on the right note. In a span of a week, this cricketer scored 14 and 101 in a four-day Victoria Second XI match only to knock in a run-a-ball 21. He did smash two huge sixes before he was caught behind, attempting a delicate shot off Anderson to glide the ball past the short third fielder.
Smith showed that he still has great abilities as a player howbeit scoring three and zero in the Shefield Shield game played at the MCG. He came to bat when the team had more than scored 73 runs while Philippe and Maddinson had opened the match together, the score being registered in the 13th over. Smith’s on fire after hitting 4 fours and two sixes as one of them was lifted off a deep midwicket dismissively. Some breathtaking lap scoops were also unfurled by him while facing the quicks as well as the spin of Todd Murphy.
